Home Nations Coaching Conference

24-25 November 2023

East Midlands

Swim England, Scottish Swimming and Swim Wales, supported by British Swimming, are planning to resume hosting their bi-annual coaching conference at the Leonardo Hotel (East Midland Airport) on 24-25 November.

Building around a theme of ‘Developing Excellence in Coaching’, the two-day event will showcase a range of presentations from some of the leading performance sport speakers and practitioners in the country, along with some of our most successful and highly respected coaches.

Who is it for?

All head and assistant coaches of clubs who are operating in the performance development world, or coaching athletes to British Championships and British Summer Meet level.

Who’s speaking at it?

The final speaker schedule is still being finalised but we have various leading speakers and topics lined up.  UK Coaching’s Tom Hartley will discuss ‘Play Their Way’.  British Swimming staff will consider what excellent coaching should look like and provide updates on the OADF and OCDF projects.  Scottish Swimming’s Paul Wilson will present on how clubs can easily and successfully fully integrate para-swimmers into their mainstream training routines.  Coaches involved in the careers of elite swimmers Tom Dean, Katie Shanahan and Maisie Summers-Newton will report on how they successfully navigated the athlete journey.  Biomechanics expert Olly Logan from British Swimming will share key learnings from some of the technical projects that have been taking place in recent years.  And much more.

Artistic Swimming Development Days Target 12 & Under

Two regional development training opportunities ran on 24th September and 1st October at Hatfield Swim Centre aimed at the region’s youngest artistic swimmers.  The first day was for 9 and 10 year olds with no figure grade and the second day for 12 & Under swimmers who had a minimum of figure grade 1.  Swimmers attended from Chelmsford SC, Dacorum ASC, Hatfield SC, Norwich ASC and Potters Bar ASC and completed a one hour land session followed by one hour in the pool.

The sessions targeted the youngest swimmers in the region to encourage them to develop strong basic skills that will then help them to pass figure grades and reach their full potential.  The land session focused on body awareness and balance to enable swimmers to understand how to know what they are doing by using their muscles and extension to move into and maintain accurate positions in the water.  They also considered technique of some key sculls that are essential for swimmers to move through figure grades.  After then completing some warm up stretches, swimmers put what they had learnt into practice during the pool sessions by practicing a range of positions and sculls.

Both sessions saw swimmers maintain impressive levels of focus for their age and they all worked hard throughout both land and pool sessions.  The region looks forward to seeing how these young artistic swimmers progress in the coming years!

Upgraded process for uploading Licensed Meets results to Rankings

For licensed meets agreed from 3 October, Swim England are introducing a new automated process that will enable meet promoters to upload the results without having to email the results to our Rankings team.

Currently Meet Promoters will send Meet results to Swim England, in order for these results to be manually added to https://www.swimmingresults.org/showmeetsbyevent/ .

Swim England have created an automated process that speeds up this process and gives control to the Promoters to upload results via https://resultsuploader.swimming.org/ . If the uploaded results have no errors, they will automatically be uploaded to Rankings within 1-2 hours, reducing the time from potentially days to hours. Refer to the below diagram for the new process.

Please use the updated Licensed Meet application form for your next meet. We also have a step-by-step guide to assist when uploading your first set of results. Both documents will be accessible from 3 October on the Licensed Meets page.

Any meet that has already been licensed will continue to use the previous process by sending results to the Rankings team.

If you have any questions, please contact [email protected].

Technical Officials and poolside volunteers – We need you!

Thank you for your support at the first two weekends of the regional championships in Norwich.

The region is currently short of officials and volunteers for the forthcoming weekend of swimming at the regional championships in Luton.

In respect of poolside volunteers, there is a genuine need for volunteers across all sessions.

The need for officials is particularly acute for session 20 and 22 on Saturday 13th May and session 23 on Sunday 14th May.

If all clubs assisted in some capacity for one session each, the roles would all be filled. Please could I ask that colleagues attending the meet give serious consideration to indicating their availability for a session or two of the competition.

The Region’s volunteer coordinator carefully plans volunteer roles to ensure that all those participating have the opportunity to see their child compete.
